Supernova

Accessentertainment IndexAstronomy Index

Supernova are remnants of giant stars at the end of their lives. All the hydrogen in the core of the star has been fused into helium and so there is no more fuel to burn. The star undergoes a rapid shrinking that creates phenomenal internal pressure. This pressure is too great for the star to withstand and a massive explosion occurs which blows the external layers of the star into outer space. This matter that has been ejected will later become a planetary nebula and then even later just a large faint nebulosity covering a large area.

The pressures inside the star when it collapses is great enough to fuse many different kinds of atoms together, which creates the more exotic varieties such as Uranium, and Plutonium. It is for this reason that it is thought our solar system used to be the matter from another star that blew up in a Supernova.
