Mars
Planet index

Mars is the fourth planet in our solar system. It's atmosphere is thinner than Earth's and is mostly carbon dioxide with a bit of nitrogen.

The Surface of Mars is covered with craters, rocks, and extinct volcanoes. Most of which is being eroded by huge sandstorms that occur for weeks at a time.

At the moment Mars is going through a stage of favoritism with the Astronomical world due to the NASA missions that have been sent there. These missions are designed to further enhance our knowledge of the solar system, but are also designed to allow us to see if it is or was possible for life to exist their. There is talk of NASA sending a manned mission within 10 years.

Mars has two moons called Phobos and Deimos. These moons are not thought to have developed alongside Mars in the early stages of the Solar System, but rather as asteroids that became trapped in the gravitational pull of the Martian body. One of the cases for this is that Phobos is on average about 23 km wide. Deimos is even smaller at about 13km wide.

Phobos is an extremely unusual satellite as it orbits Mars three times per day, at a distance of only 6000km from the Martian surface.
