Virgo has been seen as a woman by many civilisations probably due to the fact that Virgo appears to be a full bodied woman laying on here side.
Virgo is the second largest constellation in the sky and contains the best area of sky for viewing galaxies called the Virgo Cluster. The Virgo Cluster contains over ten thousand galaxies that lay approximately 45 million light years away. With a 10 or 12 inch telescope you should be able to see hundreds of members.
The most well known galaxy in Virgo, and which does not appear to be part of the Virgo Cluster is M104 the Sombrero Galaxy, due to its appearance. It is the brightest of the Virgo Galaxies and lies almost edge on. It looks like it is surrounded by a haze of dust. In 8 inch telescopes or better you can see the dark dust lane that helps to give this galaxy its name.
There are many varieties of galaxies that can be found and there are several that were placed in the Messier Catalogue. The Messier numbers of these galaxies are as follows:-
