Scutum The Shield
Constellation Index

Scutum was created at the beginning of the 18th Century.

It lies over a section of the Milky Way above Sagittarius and below Serpens.

There are two open clusters worth looking for in telescopes. The first is M11 the Wild Duck Cluster. It contains perhaps 200 stars and is very rewarding when seen with an 8 inch telescope.

The other open cluster is M26, which contains about 100 stars and is 8th magnitude. A large telescope is required for a good view.
