Perseus Love of Andromeda
Constellation Index

Read the story of Andromeda for the story of Perseus.

Perseus lies over a thin section of the Milky Way. You can find two open clusters that partly cross called the Double Cluster. They are NGC 869 and NGC 884 and should make a good view through binoculars on a low power magnification.

On the furthest right, you can see M76, the Little Dumbbell, a faint planetary nebula at 11th magnitude. You should be able to see this easily with a 6 inch telescope.

Further down Perseus you can find M34 an open cluster with about 60 stars. View through binoculars for best results.

Moving over to the left there is the California Nebula NGC 1499, so called because it resembles California. This is not easy to see even with large telescopes but long exposure photography should give a good picture.

Another good section to view with binoculars lies around alpha Persei. There are quite a few stars forming a loose open cluster.
