Ophiuchus represents a man called Asclepius, who was supposed to have been a healer with the power to raise the dead. Because of his ability Zeus allowed a place for him the sky, holding his serpent Serpens.

Ophiuchus is a large constellation that partly lies over the Milky Way. It contains many objects for viewing pleasure, most of which are star clusters.

There are many globuar clusters spreading all over Ophiuchus. They are as follows:- M9,M10,M12,M1 4,M19 and M62. A 6 inch or better is required to see them with a reasonable amount of detail. You will find that there are of various styles.

There are two open clusters NGC 6633, and IC 4665 both of which are best seen in a pair of binoculars. Both are approximately 4th magnitude, and NGC 6633 has about 30 stars, and IC 4665 has about 25 stars.

Also look for NGC 6572, a 9th magnitude blue-green planetary nebula best viewed in a 6 inch telescope or long exposure photographs.
