Not quite sure who first thought of Dorado, but I do know it was created in the 16th Century.
Dorado cantains what is definitely the easiest to see neighbouring galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud. Lying at 169000 light years it is also the closest.
The LMC is of great importance to the astronomical world, as it offers views that we cannot see in our own galaxy. In 1987 a Supernova was observed, which due to it occuring now in this technological age, offered unprecidented insight into these cataclysmic events.
Also in the LMC is the Tarantula Nebula NGC 2070. This nebula is 1000 light years in diameter, which would pale the Orion Nebula almost into significance if it was as close.
