This constellation represents the Dove that Noah released from the Ark. It was named in the 16th Century by Petrus Plancius.
This covers an area of sky with many faint stars, including the constellation stars. Although you should be able to find it with the aid of Canis Major, positioned to the top left, and with Lepus directly above. It cannot be seen from the UK.
If you fancy some challanging viewing with a telescope then look for T Columbae, a Mira variable that goes for 6.7 magnitude to 12.6 magnitude over several months.
Also requiring a telescope is NGC 1851, a globular cluster with hundreds of thousands of members.
