Cetus The Sea Monster
Constellation Index

Cetus is the monster that was sent to destroy the Kingdom of Ancient Ethiopeia. It was defeated by the love of Andromeda, Perseus.

Cetus is filled mostly with faint stars, even the alpha Cetus is only 2nd magnitude, with all others 3 or more.

Omicron Mira is the most interesting star in this constellation in the fact that it is a long period variable with a large range in magnitude variation. Over a period of about 11 months it varies in magnitude from 3.4 to 9.3, so if you can view this constellation you will notice with the naked eye that it vanishes from view completely.

There are a couple of galaxies worth looking for M77 and and M247. Both of these require a modest telescope to find being at magnitude 8.8 and 8.9, respectively.

There is one planetary Nebula worth finding NGC 246.
