Canis Major is one of the most beautiful constellations in the Sky, although form the U.K. can never fully be seen as the bottom of it never rises above the horizon.
There are many tales as to where this constellation came from. The most likely is that it is Orions hunting dog, which is why you can find Orion to the top right and Lepus (the Hare) to the right.
Sirius is the Constellations main star, and is the brightest star in the entire sky, apart from our Sun of course. It has always had a special place in Egypts past, as the flooding of the Nile would always occur just after Sirius rises after dawn for the first time each year (known as heliacal rising).
Sirius contains M41, a beautiful open cluster with a wealthy background of stars.
