This is a constellation devised in the 1600's by Hevelius.
The stars in this area of the sky are dismal to look at with the naked eye. However there are many galaxies that can be seen with the aid of telescopes. The main galaxy is M51 the Whirlpool Galaxy, one of the best known objects in Astronomy. The best view is with a large telescope of about 12 inches which starts to show the spiral structure. M51 has a companion NGC 5195 that is much further away than M51.
There is also M3, a splendid globular cluster. A telescope starts to resolve the stars in it.
