The full name of this constellation used to be Ara Centauri, meaning the Altar of centaur Chiron. Chiron was said to be the wisest creature on Earth.

The main feature of Ara is NGC 6397. One of, if not THE closest globular cluster to us. With a good pair of binoculars, you can start to resolve the stars.
