Andromeda In Greek mythology, was the daugther of Queen Cassiopeia and King Cehpeus.
Her beauty was so great that her mother boasted that Andromeda was even more
beautiful than the daughters of the Sea God Nereus. Nereus become furious at this
statement and so sent the sea monster Cetus to destroy the Kingdom.
Fearing for the kingdom, the King and Queen sought the wisdom of a prophet who said
that the only way to appease Nereus was to sacrifice their daughter Andromeda.
Andromeda was chained to rock on the coast as an offering to the monster Cetus.
However, when Cetus arrived all did not go to plan. Persues, the love of Andromeda
riding on the winged horse Pegasus, vanquished Cetus with the head of the Medusa,
which of course immediately turned Cetus to stone. Andromeda was saved.
Andromeda is located in the Northern hemisphere, surrounded with Cassiopeia and Cepheus to the North, Perseus to the left and Pegasus to the right.
Andromeda's main feature is the Andromeda galaxy M31 with its two companion galaxies M110 and M32.M31 is one of our neighbouring galaxies in the local group. It is larger than our own galaxy. On a clear night M31 looks like a faint blur of light to the unaided eye. It is best seen with a telescope or as a long exposure photograph.
